Nanaimo Craggs
Dates: 20th, 21st, 22nd & 24th May, 2012
Location: Nanaimo Craggs, Sunny Side and Lantzville Foothills (the steppes)
Grade: 5.8 - 5.10a
Type: Trad/lead/top rope
Days: 4
Hours: 16
No. of People: Variable, 2/3
Weather Conditions: Fine
Incidents: Got lost for 2 hours in the bush looking for the cragg
Key Learnings:
Extra Comments: Perhaps today was just cursed. It started with us missing the first bus by 3 minutes so we walked to the next bus stop and missed that bus by 2 minutes and the third bus by 30 seconds. We finally got the bus on our fourth try then wound up walking in ever increasing circles around the Lantville Foothills totally unsure of where we were for over 2 hours before we found the cragg. Door to cragg took 6 hours so maybe this entry should be under 'bush' in my blog! lol. The high point however was getting to test the new rack...got to do natural pro for the first time in a long time! I was convinced i would be a die hard sport climber but the natural pro is definitely piquing my interest.

Grade: 5.6 - 5.10c
Type: Top rope
Days: 2
Hours: 6
No. of People: 3
Weather Conditions: Overcast/windy
Extra Comments: I LOVE the rock in Canada, grippy, beautiful, born to be climbed on. The setting reminds me very much of Charleston. Had a great 2 days climbing, it was a little strange not being used to the Canadian grading system...we weren't quite sure what grades we were climbing and it was an interesting approach climbing 'blindly'.

No. of People: Variable, 2 - 6
Weather Conditions: Fine
Extra Comments:
24.1.13 - 2 hours - 4 pple. 18's - top. Climbing for fun, no stress top rope.
7.4.12 - 4 hours - 2 pple. 15-20 top/lead. An awesome day, found a wall we hadn't done much on. Lead a 19 that got my heart rate up. Dogged a 20 (Tongue and Groove) to death but didn't finish it...next time.
6.4.12 - 1 hour - 4 pple. 20+ (top rope). Found a crag called Devils Boots, first move is the hardest so wound up winching to the middle. Very pumpy and difficult but fun to practice on.
24.3.12 - 4 hours - 2 pple. 15-20 top/lead. A rare day...Chris was feeling not so sharp so I finished a climb for him!!! Ran up Franklins Tower again - always a favourite.
10.3.12 - 4 hours - 2 pple. 13-20 lead/top rope. Left the guide book at home...searched for a mini roof we had been wanting to do for ages and thought we found it...turned out later it was a 20 and a rather large roof. Warm up...what warm up! I lead it first and got one bolt from the anchor so am mega happy with my efforts.
4.3.12 - 2 hours - 2 pple. 14-21 lead/top rope. Rained out after 2 hours, attempted a 21 on top rope. Didn't quite get the crux...there is a whole lot of nothing between a 3 finger button and a tiny crack so I either need to grow half a metre in arm span or learn how to levitate. Have plans to go to Wanaka in April. I'm like a frog in a sock i'm so excited!
21.2.12 - 4 hours - 7 pple. 14-19 lead. Magic day. Probably my favourite day climbing this summer. Struggled on the 19 but it was really well bolted so falling wasn't so bad. Paynes has set up a slack line over the river so spent some time being an acrobat and getting wet.
18.2.12 - 3 hours - 2 pple. 14-17 lead/top rope. Neither of us climbed well today, I think perhaps it is a lesson in not climbing when tired. Everything seems harder, longer, scarier. Planning on a couple of days straight at Paynes in the next few weeks.
6.2.12 - 4 hours - 2 pple. 14-18 on lead and top rope. Continued teaching Regina about lead climbing. Nearly lost gear when struggling to complete an 18+ on lead. Had to give myself a good talking to, that 'it is sport climbing and its ok to fall'. Finished the climb. Kept my gear. Good day out.
1.2.12 - 6 hours - 2 pple. 16-19. Was about to clip the 2nd bolt on a dusty, slopy 17 when my handhold broke off and I came face to face with Chris, my belayer who was about 40cm off the ground himself. Was a sobering moment for both of us but we managed to complete the climb. Today had lots of crimpy holds and was all about feet.
30.1.12 - 6 hours - 2 pple.
16.1.12 - 4 hours - 4 pple. 15-19. Teaching Regina more about climbing, knots, belaying, technique etc. I managed the 19 overhang on top rope which i'm stoked about :D
11.12.11 - 4 hours. 15-19. - climbed my nemeses climb 3 times today, just to make sure I had it nailed. Am pretty sure I now have it nailed!
30.11.11- 4hrs - 15- 19. My skills are definitely improving, busted out an 18 climb today on lead i couldn't complete top roping last week. Wheeee! I'm on a climbing buzz right now, pity the forecast is for a week of rain :(
26.11.11 -5 hrs - 15-19. Had a role reversal today when I became the teacher for my friend. A big responsibility but also very rewarding.
20.11.11 - 5 hrs - 15- 19. Spent a huge day climbing, ran the rope from some easier anchors to have a go top roping some harder climbs that were well into the 20's. Didn't get past the first bolt but has made me hungry to get better so i can!
16.11.11 - 3 hrs - 15-19. First time back at Paynes for a while. Was fortunate to meet a fellow single climber so we have become a team for the summer. Climbed mainly 16's and got familiar with leading again.
20.4.11 - Visited Paynes again and took Gretchen on her first climb there. We both really enjoyed challenging ourselves to do new climbs. Scared ourselves with a few hairy lead moves and felt justly proud of ourselves once achieving the climb.
19.4.11 - Sea Cliffs, Golden Bay - Seagrass Wall. This was by far my favourite wall - I loved the Franklins Tower it was a 27 metre climb that we did on what we thought was a 60 metre Tech rope - turns out it was only 50m!! Luckily we had enough quick draws and prussiks to make the last few metres safe to get down but it was definitely a lesson in 'knowing your gear'.
18.4.11 - Little Lost Wall. This was my first mission to a completely new wall without instructors. I got to completely choose my own climbs, in my own time and be an 'independant climber'. Loved it!

Type: Lead/top rope
Days: 3
Hours: 8
No. of People: Variable, 2-7
Extra Comments:
3.3.12 - 2hrs, 3ppl. I did not climb brilliantly today. Climbing indoors is certainly different to Paynes. Gave the 19 overhang a good go but didn't complete it.
7.12.11 - 3hrs, 2ppl. Went to Nelson to climb as it was raining...met a group of people who are into slack lining and tumbling so have now joined a tumbling club and got myself a slack line... New sports!
22.5.11 - 7pple, 4hrs. Had a good time climbing - managed a '20'...with one cheat, it was great practice for smearing etc. Found I had lost a bit of strength - didn't manage the overhang this time however am looking forward to the rock wall opening in Grey.
21.4.11 - Am very grateful for TPP equipment after experiencing a commerical rock wall! Am very proud of myself for persevering and after an hour and a half finally getting the 'green 18 overhang'(top rope). Just to prove it wasn't a fluke i climbed it a second time to well and truly chalk it in the bag.

22.9.11 Am getting a lot closer to the 6th bolt on the overhang...it still eludes me! Got my first ‘flapper’ tonight...am wholly unimpressed with sports that leave me bleeding and make it difficult to hold a paddle the next day. However, if I’m going to climb more (and I do like climbing) it’s going to mean I need to take better care of my hands. I’m not sure that the feeling of falling on lead climbing will ever be entirely comfortable...perhaps that’s a good thing – it will keep me on my game. Complacency with rock is not an option!
20.9.11 Styled the yellow 18 in a clean run - very pleased with myself. Have started working on the 22 overhang...so far have got to the 5th bolt...5 to go :)
8.9.11 Managed the yellow 18 tonight so very chuffed with my efforts. The red 18 is still ellusive...
1.9.11 Finally the rock wall is open AND I'm recovering well enough from glandular fever to climb. Rock is definitely a sport I intend to do a lot more of. Climbed a few 17's but succumbed to the new red 18...I intend to work at it next week and put it in the bag.
1.5.11 - Rock Assessment: Spent the day on the rock wall showing my skills lead climbing, abseiling, top rope rescue and bouldering. Had a go at the overhang wall and made the 4th bolt, looking forward to mastering the 5th!

Weather Conditions: Fine
Extra Comments:
1.5.11 - A solid three hours climbing time. Feel like my climbing has skyrocketed. Am a lot more comfortable on lead and changing over to abseil/being lowered down. Had a blast. Could have climbed all day!
2.4.11 - Practised top rope rescue, switching from lead to lower down and lead to abseil. Also reviewed tape knots and figured out emergency harness and chest harness. Wish I had concentrated more on actual climbing – but felt the urgency of getting my transfers and rescues correct before next week.

Days: 5
Hours: 25
No. of People: Variable
Weather Conditions: Fine to rain
Extra Comments:
6.4.11 - Rock Assessment: anchors, anchors and more anchors. All successful which is always promising! Strained my hamstring a little while bouldering which was less than ideal - however a few days rest and it should be fine.
30.3.11 - Anchors with natural pro, top rope rescues.
22.2.11 - Spent the first day at Charleston climbing the craggs and learning about anchors. Loved the experience of climbing right on the West Coast. Got sprayed several times both as a climber and a belayer - a lesson in staying present on the task at hand. Am learning knots at a rate of knots - a handy skill to have! Our group was a bit light on food - I am sure we will do it differently next time, no one likes to be hungry.
21.2.11 - Am sporting a few cuts and bruises from not quite making moves on the cragg - definitely worth it though. Spent more time on anchors and tested out our own - all successful! More climbing of the craggs and have absolutely improved my skills overnight - I managed climbs today that I couldn't complete yesterday. Let's hope I keep learning at this speed :D
